New research suggests that our Universe is a giant Hologram.

The holographic principle is the idea that our three-dimensional reality is a projection of information stored on a distant, two-dimensional surface. Like the emblem on your credit card, the two-dimensional surface holds all the information you need to describe a three-dimensional object - in this case, our universe.

The holographic principle has been used for years as a mathematical tool in strange curved spaces. New results suggest that the holographic principle also holds in flat spaces. Our own universe could in fact be two dimensional and only appear three dimensional - just like a hologram. What we perceive as a third dimension could in fact be two-dimensional events on the “horizon” of a two-dimensional image.

This amazing idea arises from string theory. String theory says that the gravity in the universe is made up of thin, vibrating strings called gravitons. These strings make up the holograms of events that happen in 3D space within a flat cosmos. They contain the information that a 3D object would have, for example its volume. New calculations show that a two-dimensional universe projecting a holographic appearance of three dimensions could also take place if spacetime were flat, and our universe, is actually quite flat.

Gravitational phenomena are described in a theory with three spatial dimensions, the behaviour of quantum particles is calculated in a theory with just two spatial dimensions - and the results of both calculations can be mapped onto each other. Such a correspondence is quite surprising.

Also, this principle serves as a way to solve the black hole information paradox - according to quantum physics, all information is lost within a black hole, but according to the general theory of relativity, information can never be fully destroyed. All the information in our three (spatial) dimensional universe can be “stored” on a two-dimensional surface. In the context of the black hole information paradox, this suggested that information about the stuff in the black hole could somehow be encoded on the surface of the event horizon.
